Twenty-five years ago, Paul and Terry Klaassen set out to champion quality of life for seniors, beginning with a passionate desire to introduce a fresh alternative for those with long-term care needs. The Klaassens hoped to create an environment designed around people a place where residents would like to live, families would like to visit and team members would like to work. Erasing all signs of an institutional setting, the Klaassens developed a unique approach to care that would become the new model for assisted living Sunrise Senior Living. Today, their dream is thriving in more than 440 senior living and care communities around the world, including 9 in Ontario. Laura Stokes, Oakville’s Director of Community Relations, says, “Sunrise fills the gap between a retirement home and a long-term care facility. We’re proud of being resident-centered, and of our team members’ caring hearts and compassionate spirits.” Sunrise offers a wide range of senior living models including independent living, assisted living and Reminiscence, a program designed for Alzheimer’s Disease and related forms of dementia. All care is based on a deep regard for the dignity and individuality of each resident. The newest Sunrise property, opening September 2007, Thorne Mill on Steeles in Thornhill, is the only one of its kind in Ontario with state-of-the-art facilities. The daughter of a resident sums up Sunrise best when she says: “We don’t feel as though we’ve put our mother in a home. We feel like we have given her a home.” |
