When faced with life-threatening illness, traumatic injury or premature birth, parents should have access to quality pediatric care close to home. For executive director Dr. John Iacuone and his team at The Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, this is a core component of their mission.

“Before 1992, parents had to travel to Tampa or Miami,” explains Dr. Iacuone. “Today, we offer 45 pediatric sub-specialties, meeting the criteria for the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and the Florida Association of Children’s Hospitals.”

“By partnering with local hospitals, we intend to provide the same outcomes as Orlando,
Tampa and Miami,” says Dr. Iacuone. “Our mission encompasses value to the community and life improving, family-centered services; a full-time teacher, a music therapist, Ronald McDonald House, and extended day care for special needs children.

Kathy Bridge-Liles, Vice President of Women’s & Children’s Services, shares Dr. Iacuone’s vision, facilitating specialized nurse training programs in neonatal intensive care and pediatric oncology. She also credits her phenomenal team for maximizing scheduling efficiency and managing the complex flow of 101 neonatal and pediatric beds.

Exclusively positioned between Tampa and Miami, The Children’s Hospital accommodates families from all seven Southwest Florida counties – services are provided to any child who needs care, regardless of the family’s ability to pay. Community support is vital to the programs and treatments needed, and Lee Memorial’s president Jim Nathan appreciates the community support that allows The Children’s Hospital to thrive and keep pace with Southwest Florida’s growth. “Our children will benefit from this shared journey, termed the little hospital that could,” concludes Jim. “We’re fortunate to have dedicated and caring people who make miracles happen every day.”
